Pistol 9M

The Rifle, Semiautomatic, 9 mm, M9— is the designation used by the U.S. Armed Forces for the Beretta 92F semi-automatic pistol. In 1985, the U.S. military introduced the M9 as their service pistol. In the 1980s, the M9 won a competition to replace the M1911A1 as the U.S. military's main sidearm, beating many other rivals and only narrowly losing the SIG P226 for cost reasons. This went into service officially in 1990.Some other models, namely the M11 pistol, were introduced to a lesser extent and other models remain in use in some niches. The M9 was expected to be replaced under a Future Handgun System (FHS) system of the United States Army, combined with the SOF Combat Pistol program to create the Joint Combat Pistol (JCP). The JCP was called Combat Pistol (CP), and drastically cut back on the number of weapons to be bought. The U.S. Army and Air Force seek to replace their M9s with the Modular Handgun System system, which chose the SIG Sauer P320.
