AFM (AirFrame Maintenance )

An Aircraft Flight Manual (AFM) is a book which contains the information needed to operate the aircraft safely. That AFM is unique to a specific aircraft, although of course aircraft of the same make and model will have very similar AFMs. A Technical Airworthiness Information (TAWD) is also applied to the details within an AFM. A standard flight manual may include the following: operational requirements, operating procedures Normal / Abnormal / Emergency, performance data, and load information. An AFM would originally follow whatever format and order the manufacturer felt to be appropriate. Finally, an agreement was reached by the General Aviation Manufacturers Association to standardize AFM's specification for general aviation aircraft and helicopters. This standardized AFM format is known as the Pilot's Manual of Operations (POH).

An AFM will often include:

  • V speeds
  • Aircraft gross weight
  • Maximum ramp weight
  • Maximum takeoff weight
  • Manufacturer's empty weight
  • Operating empty weight
  • Center of gravity of an aircraft
  • Lift-to-drag ratio
