The Al-Khalid is a main battle tank developed jointly by Pakistan and China during the 1990s, based on the Chinese Type 90-IIM tank. China North Industries Corporation built the initial prototype under the name MBT-2000, and Norinco also offered the tank for export.
Pakistani armed forces and Turkish defense industry officials shared details about the al-Khalid 2 main battle tank (MBT) programme, during the 2016 International Defense Exhibition and Seminar (IDEAS) in Karachi.
The al-Khalid 2 was envisaged in the mid-to-late 2000s as a major update to the al-Khalid, which was itself supposed to be the Pakistan Army's new MBT. Nevertheless, in the midst of the 2008 Global Financial Crisis, strenuous finances, coupled with the decade-long counterinsurgency (COIN) campaign in the tribal areas, placed the al-Khalid program on a much slower path in terms of procurement and growth.
But with some relative stability, the Army seems to be confident resuming its procurement of big-ticket armaments, most notably an alternate dedicated attack helicopter complementing its forthcoming Bell AH-1Z Vipers and new MBTs. The al-Khalid show will play a central role in the latter.
At IDEAS, an official in the Pakistan Army told Army Recognition that the al-Khalid 2 will be powered by a 1,500 hp diesel engine, a notable improvement from the 1,200 hp engine powering the al-Khalid and al-Khalid 1 (a slight iterative change to the tank).
