ATGMS Tow is an anti-tank missile from America. TOW replaced much smaller missiles such as the SS.10 and ENTAC, offering roughly twice the effective range, a more powerful warhead, and a substantially improved semi-automatic guidance system, which could also be equipped with night time infrared cameras.
TOW was first developed in 1970, and is one of the most common anti-tank guided missiles. It can be used in a wide variety of manually transported and mounted vehicle types, as well as common use on helicopters.
Design and development
The XBGM-71A was originally developed by Hughes Aircraft between 1963 and 1968, for both ground and heliborne applications. Raytheon Co. bought Hughes Electronics from General Motors Corporation in 1997, so the development and manufacture of TOW systems now comes under the Raytheon brand. The tool is used in roles like anti-armor, anti-bunker, anti-fortificationand anti-amphibious landing. TOW works with more than 45 military units and is incorporated globally on more than 15,000 platforms for land, equipment and helicopters.
